For those who don’t know about the CFS case, it came about as a result of the referendum held in 2008. Basically, SFSS members voted to leave the CFS (Canadian Federation of Students), but the referendum held in order to do so was questioned and seen as illegitimate by the CFS. The issue went to court because the SFSS anticipated troubles and wanted to get the matter dealt with as soon as possible. The outcome of the legal proceedings has been a bit foggy.
While this doesn’t affect CogSci students in particular, there were large sums of money being poured into both legal fees as well as membership fees (to the CFS), which ultimately affect a number of financial aspects to do with SFSS fees/funds and the breakdown thereof. This money could be being put back into DSU support.
The SFSS has prepared a FAQ document, for those who want a quick run-through of the situation.
